A leaking vape tank can be embarrassing, especially when you are out in public and one is leaking in your pocket leaving a stain in your crotch area.

Luckily, while this occurrence is embarrassing it thankfully shouldn’t occur too often, and with the following tips you can stop your tank from leaking.

#1: Make sure to fill your tank properly. One of the most common causes of leaks is how you fill your tank. It is important that when you fill the tank that you avoid getting any e-liquid into the central tube. Try to fill the tank as you would pour a beer, tip it at an angle and pour it without spilling. If you do get some e-liquid into the central tube you should clear it by blowing the excess out of the bottom.

#2: Tighten everything up. Another common cause of leakage is not screwing all of the components together correctly. Any slight gap in components will likely result in a leak. You should aim to avoid “cross threading” too, which occurs when you screw something together but they are not lined up correctly, this leads to an imperfect seal that will likely leak.

#3: Don’t over-tighten. If you over-tighten the components on your device you risk damaging the o-rings. These small rubber rings help make a perfect seal between the various components, so it is essential they are not damaged to ensure fewer leaks occur. You should keep an eye on these rings, they will degrade over time, and if they do you should replace them.

#4: Keep your tank standing upright. This is less of a concern when the tank is full. However, if it is only half or partially full the e-liquid can leak out of the “juice holes”, which can then seep through the coil and into the central tube, or air flow holes.

#5: Use the correct coil for your chosen e-liquid. There are two main types of e-liquid, those that contain PG (Propylene Glycol) and those that contain VG (Vegetable Glycerine). PG is the thinner of the two and require higher resistance coils. VG needs low resistance coils as it can get clogged on high resistance coils. These low resistance coils tend to be bigger than the high resistance coils to allow for the thicker liquid, if you use PG with these coils then you may encounter flooding and leakages.

#6: Increase your power setting. Flooding is another common cause of leakage, and it occurs when too much e-liquid is pulled into the coil before it can be vaporised. One of the easiest ways to rectify this problem is by increasing your power setting on the device. This will ensure more e-liquid is vaporised with each puff.

#7: Add more material for wicking. This tip is for those that build their own coils, but if you are experiencing leakage it may be worth trying. You need to make sure that you are using just enough cotton to fit around the coils, but not too much as this will prevent the e-liquid from getting through to the coil itself.

#8: Use a higher VG e-liquid. As we have stated already, PG-based e-liquids are thinner than those made using VG. So it makes sense that using a VG-based e-liquid would help to reduce leakages.

#9: Change your inhalation style. While e-cigs are designed as a replacement for traditional tobacco based cigarettes the way they are inhaled are different. When you smoke, if you draw harder you are going to be getting more smoke, but this is not the case with vaping. If you inhale too quickly when you vape you may be pulling too much e-liquid into the coil for it to vaporise, this can increase the risk of leaking. Rather than inhaling quickly and sharply I would suggest that you slow down and try and inhale much slower.

#10: Choose a leak resistant tank. As technology advances, your vape device and its various components will become more advanced. There are some tanks currently available that claim to be resistant to leaking.

#11: Replace your coil. You may want to get your moneys worth so you may put off buying a replacement coil, yet if you are encountering leakage problems it could be down to your coil not functioning properly. If you are not ready to buy a new coil just yet then a temporary solution would be to remove and replace the wick.

It may be impossible to complete erase leaks from occurring, but if you follow the above tips you can certainly cut the number of leaks you experience.

The key here is to maintain your tank and your device. If you look after your device then the fewer issues you will encounter.
